Book Reviews
Are you looking for books about Delphi™, C++Builder™, or Kylix™? Are you distressed by the tons of books, many of them being hardly more than a reprint of the corresponding online help?

The following list of books is a highly selective one. The selection of books is guided by the following criteria:

  • Is the book written in a clear and concise style
  • Does the book provide unique information which cannot be found in documents such as help files or public documents such as RFCs.
  • Is there a mission statement by the author (e.g. in the foreword)?
  • Do the contents of the book comply with the mission statement?

If you have read a book which you want to recommend to others, please give us a hint. Send a simple mail containing the book title and the author(s) to Hans Lohninger. We'll buy the book and read it, and recommend it on this page if we feel it is worth the recommendation.

We have contracted Amazon, the worldwide leading online bookstore, to be able to provide direct links to their online store. If you purchase a book by following these links (the Amazon logos below) you support our book review program as we receive a small percentage of the book price in form of bonus points. These bonus points are used to buy new books and perform more reviews.

Please note that there are two links for each book, one for European customers and one for US and international customers. In order to minimize delivery time we recommend to use the proper link. German books have only a single link to the German Amazon shop.

Here's the list of our favorites (sorted by author names). Books not listed here are either not worth to be recommended, or we did not (have time to) read the particular book.

Cantu, M. Mastering Delphi 6
Sybex 2001 ISBN 0-7821-2874-2
The thickness of this book (more than two inches!) is both its strength and its weakness. On the roughly 1100 pages you find almost everything you want to know about Delphi. The wealth of information not only provides profound support to the newcomer, but also to experienced Delphi programmers. Lots of code snippets illustrate the text. However, the weight of the book prevents it from being read in the bed...

The book comes with all the code and a searchable PDF version on CDROM.

Shemitz, J. Kylix: The Professional Developer's Guide and Reference
APress 2002 ISBN 1-893115-89-5
This book has been written with Object Pascal and Kylix in mind. Besides a profound introduction, it contains a lot of tips and tricks. The author knows what he is writing about. In addition to the very clear and precise writing the author also expressed his personal opinion on various programming issues. We find these personal notes to be extremly helpful. Personal note from the reviewer: Jon, you have written a superb book - I read it while staying on vacations and enjoyed it very much - Hans Lohninger

A book in German language dealing with COM and DCOM development under Delphi. Although the style is less than excellent, it contains a lot of information on (D)COM programming and interfaces. Includes a CDROM.
